After 20 years of dedicated teaching, research, and service at the University of Utah's School of Architecture, Jörg Rügemer has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Architecture.
Throughout his two decades at the University of Utah, Jörg has taught and mentored more than 1,500 students, helping prepare the next generation of architects to create a more thoughtful, sustainable, and high-performing built environment. His commitment to architectural education extends beyond the classroom and design studio through international study experiences, collaborative research, and close mentorship that encourages students to explore design with curiosity, technical rigor, and a global perspective.
This promotion recognizes his sustained contributions to architectural education, scholarship, professional practice, and service to the University and the broader architectural community.

Construction continues at Studio 125 as installation of the cement board façade panels begins, revealing the building's clean, contemporary exterior.
The envelope has been carefully detailed to balance aesthetics, durability, energy efficiency, and fire resilience. All exterior materials are noncombustible, including the aluminum-clad solid wood windows, while exposed areas of the flat roof are protected with a gravel ballast layer to enhance fire resistance.
Behind the façade, a high-performance rainscreen assembly provides an additional layer of protection. A continuous 2-inch layer of rigid exterior insulation improves the building's thermal performance, while a 1-inch ventilated cavity behind the cement board cladding allows any incidental moisture to drain and dissipate before reaching the airtight weather barrier. This integrated approach creates a durable, resilient enclosure designed to perform efficiently in Utah's climate while supporting the building's clean architectural expression.
As the exterior enclosure comes together, Studio 125 continues to reflect the project's commitment to thoughtful detailing, sustainable design, and long-term performance.

A portion of the 127 Haus east façade is shown nearing final completion. The façade-integrated Avancis photovoltaic array is prominently visible, framed by anthracite Ökoskin panels. As discussed further below—and conceptually aligned with the Atomium’s adjustable façade mounting system—the project employs a sophisticated, three-dimensionally adjustable steel-and-aluminum support system. This approach allows precise alignment with typical Utah wood framing, which often presents unexpected dimensional tolerances ranging from ½ inch to as much as 6 inches.

Tunnel of Time
A fascinating visit and journey back to the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. One of the fair’s most iconic attractions, the Atomium transports visitors into the optimistic visions of the 1950s. Its metal superstructure, assembled with precision-engineered fasteners and an exacting façade mounting system, supports gleaming aluminum panels of remarkable clarity and refinement.
The Atomium reveals a level of technological sophistication and attention to detail that is often absent in contemporary U.S. construction, where comparable structures are frequently welded together in a purely utilitarian manner. In contrast, this landmark demonstrates a deep understanding of both function and beauty, celebrating construction detail as an essential part of architectural expression and making these qualities clearly visible to visitors from within the structure itself.

At the Pine Meadow Ranch Cabin, installation of the custom floating staircase is ongoing. The rigid, floating metal stair tread frames are reinforced with 1/2-inch-thick floor-to-ceiling steel rods, which also serve as the structural support for the stair railing and handrail system, which will be added as the next step.

The Studio 125 façade has been sealed with a self-adhering airtight membrane that also serves as the building’s primary weather barrier, integrated behind the cement board rainscreen system. All windows are fully installed and meticulously air- and water-sealed, incorporating a three-layer defense within the gap between the window frames and the wood framing.

Another group of University of Utah architecture students visited Studio 125 to observe the progress of the façade installation and experience the newly installed European Passive House–certified triple-pane windows in operation.

To complete the architectural composition of 125 Haus and Studio 125, the framing of the Gardenhut has been finalized. This 180 sq. ft. structure follows standard code-compliant construction and, while it does not match the high-performance envelope of the main residences, it fulfills its intended purpose as a minimalist utility shed. Future use as a seasonal guest room remains a possibility.
With the full building mass now in place, the Gardenhut provides a defined spatial boundary for the northwest patio, enhancing the outdoor area and transforming it into a comfortably enclosed, almost urban-feeling space within the wooded, suburban context.

At the Pine Meadow Ranch Cabin, installation of the custom floating staircase structure is underway. Each tread cantilevers from the wall and is anchored into a concealed metal framework tied into the facade’s inner and outer framing as well as the concrete retaining wall. Once completed, the steel profiles will be hidden behind drywall, while solid American maple treads will form a visually light yet structurally robust feature within the double-height main living space.

For Studio 125, we’ve made a strategic shift away from the ZIP System sheathing due to its inconsistent air infiltration performance, often caused by installation variability among trades. Instead, we are utilizing a self-adhered membrane behind the rain screen system. This membrane acts as both a water and air barrier while remaining vapor open, allowing the building to breathe.
One of the key advantages of this approach is its ability to effectively seal small holes and gaps in the sheathing, creating a continuous exterior air barrier that is further protected by the rain screen cladding.
Our first blower door test—scheduled after full enclosure and prior to insulation—will provide valuable insight into the effectiveness of this system in achieving our air tightness goals.

Some moments feel like déjà vu—and this was one of them. I began my architectural career in 1995 at Frank O. Gehry’s office in Santa Monica, where we often gathered around the model of what we referred to then as the "Fred and Ginger" building in Prague.
Nearly 30 years later, during a professional trip with peers, I finally experienced the completed Nationale-Nederlanden building in person. Located on Rašínovo nábřeží along the Vltava (Moldau) River, the structure has a whimsical, almost magical presence - especially at night. Now a widely recognized landmark in Prague, it stands as a testament to Gehry's rather early, immediately post-Bilbao architecture.

The first façade-integrated photovoltaic panels have been installed at the 127 Haus site. Featuring a matte finish, the panels were approved by the local HOA as an acceptable exterior cladding material. Their material and installation costs—prior to electrical integration—are competitive with the Ökoskin façade panels used on the non-electrified portions of the home, with the added benefit that the Avancis panels generate electricity.
Energy modeling confirmed that all four facades can serve as productive surfaces, as the high-elevation site (9,000 feet) benefits from significant solar gain—even on the north side—due to winter sun reflection off the snow.
Atelier Jörg Rügemer is proud to be the first to introduce these panels to the U.S. market. Initially tested for high-altitude performance by TÜV in Germany, the panels have since received UL certification for commercial use in the United States.

A group of University of Utah architecture students visited Studio 125 to observe project progress and gain insight into the process of designing and constructing high-performance Passive Houses. Discussions also addressed the unique challenges and opportunities within Utah’s design and construction industry.

A recent visit to the newly renovated MUDE – Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon reveals a remarkable transformation of the former 1864 headquarters of Banco Nacional Ultramarino. Located in the city’s historic center, the building now seamlessly blends heritage and innovation.
The renovation features an impressive yet discreet seismic retrofit of the historic façade—an engineering achievement that respects the building’s original character while enhancing its resilience. Inside, visitors can explore dynamic fashion exhibitions alongside a compelling student-led installation offering a critical and distinctly European perspective on the global urban housing crisis.
The experience is further enriched by a visit to the former bank vault in the basement—an evocative space that adds depth and atmosphere to the museum’s layered narrative.

For the Studio 125 Garage Deck, Quad-Deck’s insulating form system was utilized to achieve full slab insulation in a single pour, eliminating the need for additional horizontal formwork above the bedrooms below. The prefabricated, cut-to-size forms are available in various thicknesses, allowing for adaptation to different load requirements. By incorporating an integrated beam structure, the system reduces overall concrete usage. During installation, the forms are walkable but must be properly shored to support the concrete pour.

Ground source energy drilling for the 127 Haus in The Colony, Utah, continued through June 2024. A total of 14 boreholes have been installed beneath the south patio as part of the direct ground source system, which utilizes copper piping and a liquid heat transfer medium that connects directly to the home’s heat pump units.

The groundbreaking of the Pine Meadow Ranch Cabin at the Tollgate development in Summit County, Utah, marks the beginning of a high-performance, resilient residential project. Spanning 1,500 square feet, this custom-built home is designed to meet Passive House standards, ensuring superior energy efficiency and comfort for the client couple. Situated at an elevation of 8,000 feet, the cabin incorporates many sustainable features, including a greywater recycling system, which minimizes its impact on the septic field and surrounding environment.

An invited juror visit to the Spring 2024 Master Thesis Design Reviews at the School of Design, Architecture, and Art at North Dakota State University in Fargo offers a unique perspective on architecture from a rural standpoint. Over the course of two full days, a cohort of 12 students presented their year-long projects to the jury, showcasing their research, design development, and architectural insights.

Schematic Design of the Redland Blue Sky Ranch project in Grand Junction, Colorado, is initiated. It is a forward-thinking residential community featuring contemporary homes built with an emphasis on health, comfort, and sustainability. Designed to meet Passive House standards for high performance, the community will offer luxurious, energy-efficient living spaces. Situated adjacent to the renowned Redlands Mesa Golf Course, an award-winning course set amidst 220 acres of pristine meadow open space, the development will consist of approximately 60 meticulously designed boutique homes.

Alongside a group of recent Park City High School graduates, Jörg Rügemer embarks on an educational scuba diving expedition aboard a live-aboard vessel in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. While enjoying an immersive adventure, the group explored diverse oceanic habitats and examined the significant impact humans have on the delicate marine ecosystems. The experience was complemented by in-depth discussions on potential solutions for preserving oceanic plant and fish life.

The groundbreaking of Studio 125
in Park City in November 2022 is closely followed by the installation of the formwork for footings and foundation walls before an unexpectedly snow-heavy end of the year slows the project down for the winter. After an incredibly harsh 2022-2023 winter, construction progressed through the summer and fall, with framing starting after the winter 2023/24. Similar to its neighboring 125 Haus, Studio 125 is a passive-to-active research case study project for maximum energy efficiency at a reasonable construction cost. Upon completion, the project will make the case for suburban densification as one possible solution to the ongoing housing crisis in the Salt Lake City and Park City metropolitan areas. Studio 125 is constructed in a fully design-build delivery, therefore ensuring the desired high aesthetic and required high-performance quality.

After 3 years of careful design and integrated development, the
127 Haus construction started in The Colony
in Park City in the fall of 2022. Due to its challenging location at 8,800' elevation, a relatively short summer and fall building window will stretch the project's construction phase well into 2024. As of fall 2023, footings, foundations, and backfill have been installed, with the 12" thick under-slab insulation going in to ensure a thermal-bridge-free thermal building envelope, and the framing is underway.
